The European Union has made history by approving the AI Act, the first comprehensive legislation aimed at regulating artificial intelligence (AI) systems across the 27 member states. After intense negotiations, the European Commission, Council, and Parliament reached an agreement on this landmark regulation on December 8, 2023, but it still needed a vote. In March 2024, the European Parliament passed the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) , marking it the world's first major act to regulate AI.

The EU AI Act establishes a harmonized, risk-based framework to govern the development, deployment, and use of AI within the EU. Its goal is to ensure AI systems are safe, transparent, ethical, and respect fundamental rights while fostering innovation in this transformative technology.

Key Aspects of the EU AI Act:

1. Definition of AI Systems: The Act adopts the OECD's definition of an AI system as "a machine-based system that infers how to generate outputs that can influence physical or virtual environments."
